title:Date palm diversity
Summary: In this presentation, the speaker introduces himself as Adviser at the Centre National de Developpement des Ressources Biologiques (CNDRB). This institution is linked to RIHN within a MOU since December 2009 in order to implement at the institutional level RIHN’s project R05: A study of Human Subsistence Ecosystems in Arab Societies. Speaker gives some informations to understand why date palm is important in the sahara conditions. After that, he gives some details concerning date palm propagation and farmer’s selection modes as fondamental to classify source of variation in date palm biodiversity. He presented the approach study applied to date palm genetic ressources and he confims that cultivars and khalt obtained from seedling are the most accessible part of diversity to be inventoried adn characterized at different levels. Finaly, speaker presented his work plan to complete the study of InBelbel and Matriouen date palm diversity as a key stone species. Those two little sites constitute locations of field study in RIHN project. Date palm cultivars were inventoried and will be characterized at the molecular level using RIHN’s facilities.
