(29 Apr 2011 ~8 May 2011,Algeria) Kyoto Prefectural University/ Professor・Kazunari USHIDA
A preliminary study was conducted in Saharian Atlas, Algeria, on the wild mammals with in a project entitled as “A study of human subsistence ecosystems in Arab societies” (PL Prof. Nawata).
1) We have held several meetings with research officers and directors of the Centre National Developpement de Resource Biologique (CNDRB; Ministry of Environment) at the Laguermi Research Station of CNDRB near El-Bayade. There were many rodent burrows within the Station and it was possible to collect fecal samples for DNA analyses. We have also made a reconnaissance on the surrounding area, some oasis villages in particular such as Brezina and Ghassoul.

4)It was suggested that the research for the medium size mammals such as Barbary sheep and Gazelles should be directed to the hill top near the Laguermi research station.
We will have technical helps of veterinarians in the Zoo in the Jardin d’Essai in Alger for the future study about animal ecology.
